Adapted Physical Education—POOL
IDDI's heated, indoor pool has a unique barrier-free lift that facilitates easy transfer from wheelchair to pool. While in the pool, our students and adults participate in learning basic swimming skills, playing ball, and just having fun. Those who require range of motion to stiff joints enjoy the relaxing effects of the therapeutic water temperature. All of our children have one-on-one staffing for maximum safety. Our adults have individualized swimming assessments completed by the Adapted Physical Education instructor, which address their specific staffing needs within the pool. In both cases, there is also a person who stays on deck to assist people into and out of the water and to assist in emergency situations.
Adapted Physical Education—GYM
During gym sessions, children participate in learning new activities such as ball handling skills (basketball, catching, bouncing, rolling); eye-hand coordination skills (bowling, beanbag toss, hitting a ball off a tee, hockey); balance skills (balance mat, balance beam, tilt board); and cardiovascular exercise (treadmill, rollerblading, adaptive bicycle riding). Students with vestibular needs can access our therapeutic swing or Moon Walk air mattress. Those with tight muscles receive stretching/range of motion exercises. Our adults work on general strengthening, stretching, and cardiovascular fitness on the treadmill. Before the annual Special Olympics, they also begin training during their gym time.
