Overview

While specialized educational, residential and comprehensive medical services are the nucleus of services provided by IDDI, providing those services and supports in an environment that promotes home and community involvement is at the heart of the IDDI family philosophy. Despite a busy schedule of home and day program activities, individuals make time to visit zoos, beaches and parks; take trips to museums; and enjoy whale watches, bowling, the beach, local baseball games, picnics, horseback riding, summer concerts, and dining out at restaurants. In addition to these activities, they also learn specific life skills that foster increased independence by taking trips to local supermarkets, the post office and mall. Many of our adult individuals also perform supervised volunteer work at nursing homes and local churches.

To address the specific needs of our residents and to foster both fun and independence, IDDI offers a Children's Recreational program and an Adult Community Support program.

Children's Recreational

IDDI's Children's Program includes a Recreation Department that works to involve the children in after-school and weekend activities. The department hosts on-campus dances and pizza parties for the children, in addition to holiday preparations and special events, such as a Halloween costume party, Family Day, and our annual winter Holiday Party. Our Recreation Department is also responsible for coordinating the Special Olympics and is involved in campus activities such as afternoon walks, after school swimming, movies on the wide screen in the gym and playground activities. They also plan larger off-campus trips to events such as the circus, ice shows, and sporting events.

Adult Community Support

The Adult Program has Community Support staff whose primary focus is to assist individuals in identifying activities they enjoy, and in becoming a contributing member of their community. The support staff hosts pizza parties and special events, such as a Harvest Fest dance, Family Day, and our annual winter Holiday Party. The staff also supports individuals to become active volunteers in the community, with many of our adults performing supervised volunteer work at nursing homes and local churches. Individuals regularly engage in recreational and cultural events, and enjoy trips to the museum, whale watches, bowling, and summer concerts. In addition to these activities, they also learn specific life skills that foster independence by taking trips to local supermarkets, the post office, and nearby malls. The Community Support staff is also responsible for coordinating Special Olympics and the IDDI bowling league. They work closely with residential supervisors so that the needs and wants of individuals are always met.
